Review – Alphabet Erotica Book

With Great Thanks to GoodVibes.com Who sent me a Gift Card, I finally get to review my first book- Alphabet Erotic a from Cleis Press.

Whilst Alphabet Erotica technically is a book, there isn’t much reading involved. It actually consists of 26 sexy Pin Up Girl Portraits created by Scott Idleman. It is quite small, only 5.5″ x 4″ and features 26 different illustrated postcards, one for each letter of the Alphabet. These Illustrations are based on the Alphabet of Erotica books by Alison Tyler, who also worked as an Editor in the process of creating this collection.

Each of the postcards are printed on thick card stock. The Pin up girl Portrait, her letter and the sensual word it stands for is printed on the front which has a semi gloss finish. On the back there is the little square in the corner for where you stick your postage stamp, as well as a line of text running down the center, just like regular postcards have.

Scott’s Illustrations are done in a Vintage 40′s style and remind me of the Famous Vargas Girls pictures. I feel that they are far too beautiful to waste them as Postcards, I’d much rather choose my favourites to put into photo frames to display around the house.

Whilst they are presented in the form of a book it doesn’t take much for the individual cards to start pulling away from the binding. This may be so that you can easily remove the postcards to use without damaging them, but it does make it hard to keep them all together. Many of them came away from the binding whilst I just had a quick look through it. But as they are Art worthy Postcards that belong on display rather than hidden away on a bookshelf it doesn’t truly upset me. It would be great if they were held in their binding a little better, but if I knew this ahead of time it wouldn’t have stopped me from buying it.

Gift Giving & Holiday Wishlists

Sometimes giving is better than Receiving

If you’ve ever read my blog before you’ll know I’m always up for a good meme, so when I saw this posted by both Essin-em & Dangerous Lilly I just knew I wanted to jump on the bandwagon and post my own list as well as trying to grant as many wishes as I could for others. I do truly believe that giving is better than receiving so if you also have a wishlist please comment with the url so I can add it to this post and try to grant at least one of your wishes too.

How it works

Step One
- Make a post to your blog, tumblr, facebook, myspace, what have you. The important thing is to make sure these wishes are things you really, truly want and that people can see the post.

I’d say the Right Words

If only I knew what they were

I’d like to say the words that would hit rewind, taking things back to the way they were, back to when we were happy. Back when we could barely wait to speak, when we had to try so hard to keep our hands off of each other. Back to the time when we both felt the same. But I don’t know quite when that time was, and the words needed to rewind anything continuously escape me.

I’m well versed in biting my tongue and forgetting things others have done wrong. I could easily startover, wipe the slate clean and begin again. A fresh start, Tabula Rasa. But that won’t work unless you want it to, unless you too would be willing to forget what came before today. Wanting to go back to the beginning to ensure we did it right this time. Even if I found the right words nothing can happen if you’re not willing and, well, I don’t think you care enough to be willing.

I’d gotten myself to a great place, I was starting to let go, finally my every thought was no longer somehow polluted with you… Then when I finally had you out of my system. When I was ready to start living my life without you, you re=opened the door. You inadvertently gave me hope again, It’s not really your fault, you didn’t lead me on. It was just that when you needed my help just happened to be a few days after I’d let go finally.

There was a moment, a small time frame where I could tell you were considering it. But before I could join you in the moment it was over. I felt that moment once before, It fueled months of heart ache, endless hours of regret, my fault not yours… but still it hurts. Knowing I want the things you want, knowing I can give you what you need, all whilst knowing that you just don’t want it from me.

Occassionally my mind will trick me into believing maybe you do want at least part of me. That maybe I just need to tell you that I’d gladly give it to you, but I know you well enough to know if you wanted it you would just ask for it.

I’ve even tried hating you, a different tactic but it too failed. I want you out of my head almost as much as I want you in my bed. If ever I do find the right words.. I hope I never know

I know this possibly isn’t the place to write this, It’s not going to add anything to my blog, and I doubt anyone wants to read it… I just needed to write it

A week or so ago I got an email from the people who have created Penis Bandz asking if I’d like to check out their product and write a review for them. I automatically fired off an email to say I’m sorry but I live in the middle of bum fuck nowhere – aka Australia. For once they didn’t care and sent me off a couple of packets of Penis Bandz.

So what are they?

Reviewing Sex Toys

Yep, I’m caving and going to Eden

Not many people realise just how easy it is to be sent free sex toys in return for writing an honest review of the product and posting it online. The number of online sex toy stores that send free toys to bloggers is so long that I don’t think I could list them all. The number of sex toy stores that are happy to send free toys to people who live in Australia, those I can count on one hand – but none of them are Australian!

My first review I wrote was for a product I had purchased, followed by a box load of toys I was sent for free from a US based store – but I paid for the international shipping. Then I got lucky and won a few give aways right around the time that my life fell apart. Loosing my income ruled out paying for postage to get products sent down under. So I contacted a number of Australian sites regarding writing reviews for them, but the best offer I got was to buy products at a discounted rate in return for my reviews – close but no cigar!

By this time I had shared the fact that I was reviewing sex toys with a few close friends & my younger sister – of course she wanted in on it too! But she went the Eden Fantasys route.

For anyone who doesn’t know Eden Fantasys are a large online sex toy store based in America that run a huge online community and sex toy reviewing program. They are possibly the only site that is willing to send toys to reviewers who live in Australia.

So why didn’t I review for them?

Earlier this year there was a big whoo haa about them in regards to them banning one community member, which was quickly followed by a shit storm regarding the way their site handled outbound links. Although I wasn’t involved I was vocal in my own way about the debacle. So when my sister started writing reviews for them I was unhappy with her.

But the truth be told… If you live outside of the US and wish to review sex toys on your blog your options are limited depending on where you reside. So for months I’ve sat back and watched quite jealously, as my sisters toy box grew & grew & grew, despite the fact that the only company that she is reviewing for is Eden Fantasys.

My resolve for taking a stand on an issue that didn’t involve me began to weaken.

I had received an email from Eden Fantasys asking if I’d like to participate in one of their reviewing programs (they have more than one!) as I had signed up for an account before the whole whoo haa occurred. The program that they contacted me about was their ambassador program. Once a month they send a product out to bloggers in return for writing a post about their site. If you want to you can review the toy, but you don’t have to. It simply has to be a post written about Eden Fantasys that includes the required links to their website,

So whilst I am being incredibly hypocritical by accepting free products from a site that I spoke out against negatively and in doing so I may loose some respect. (to the banned reviewer – if you do happen to read my blog I’m sorry) But hey… at least I’ll be getting off!

For other sex bloggers who are looking for someone to review sex toys for Eden Fantasys.com does send toys all around the globe and to the best of my knowledge they run 3 different reviewing programs. On site reviews – where you write reviews and they are published on their website, off site reviews where you write reviews on your website or blog and their ambassador program where you get sent a free sex toy once a month (you can choose from a wide range of products) in return for a post about their site that includes a link to their site and one of their banner such as this one….

I was sent the Couture Collection Bliss by California Exotics well over a month ago as part of their ‘Sexpert‘ program. As it is rechargeable, with a base that plugs into the wall socket my review had to be delayed whilst I dealt with the incompatibility of American plugs and Australian sockets – Just think square peg, round hole – literally.

But the bliss was well worth the wait.

My last foray into the world of remote controlled vibrating eggs was a huge #FAIL! I’m so glad to report that this time was a huge success. Not only does this egg have strong, high powered vibrations in numerous strengths and patterns, Its remote works and iw works well!! Finally my fantasies of being out shopping whilst allowing my partner to control the sex toy I’m wearing can be realised.

The Important Info

Remote Range: up to 5m – 16′

Care & Cleaning: Warm Water & dis-infecting soap will do the job. Although the egg is waterproof and you can fully submerge it, washing it in the dishwasher or boiling it to sterilise it are both out as the heat is likely to fry the electrical parts.

The Exciting stuff…

The front of the box The Couture Collection Bliss comes in a pretty cute, cube like box that features images of the product along with some product info printed on it. Contained within are the Egg and its remote along with the heart shaped charging base and the AC adapter to plug it in with. There’s also some product info and a quick, illustrated guide to charging and using the product.

It’s all pretty cute looking!

The Egg sits upside down inside the heart shaped cradle to charge, whilst it’s charging you’ll see a red light on the base which turns green when it’s fully charged. It will hold it’s charge for about a day and can be used for well over an hour without loosing power.

There are 3 different vibration intensities, low, medium and high as well as four patterns; Escalation, Pulsation, Fast Escalation & Fast Pulsation. It is super easy to use, with a single button to switch the egg on based near the cord, and two buttons on the remote. One switches the remote on or off and the other cycles through the three vibration intensities followed by the four patterns. My favourite is by far the two pulsation settings. They are such strong, short bursts of energy that pass throughout my entire pelvic area, truly stimulating. I’m kind of blown away by how strong it is, far stronger than any of my bullets. I guess this is just one of the many benefits of rechargeable sex toys.

The product info states that the remote control has a range of up to 5m (16 feet) and I tend to believe them! Whilst I was browsing the cereal aisle my partner changed the vibration pattern on me from the dairy cabinet. It’s so quiet that you really don’t need to worry about getting ‘busted’ if you too decide to venture out in public with it. Sex toys whilst shopping truly are fun!

It’s also completely water proof – the egg that is! So you can take it in the bath or shower, heck you could even swim whilst wearing it! On top of it’s obvious pleasurable benefits the egg can also be used to add some extra oomph to your kegel excersizes – your pelvic floor muscles are important!! Just don’t go trying to stick it up your bum as you may end up in the ER. Despite the loop/string it could easily slip in and disappear.

Unlike my last one, this egg is seamless and simple to clean, I just washed it in the sink with hot water and dis-infecting soap, it really couldn’t be easier!

So if your after a remote controlled toy to spice up your next shopping trip, a toy that doubles as a kegel excersizer, or just something to spice up your love life, the couture collection bliss just might be for you. I haven’t yet found it for sale, but according to CalExotics.com the expected retail price will be around $122.99… and yes, hell yes, it is worth it.

Sex Ed Matters

Why I wish I’d had Scarleteen.com

I grew up a little different to most, I was kicked out of home at the age of 12 shortly after my parents split up. From the ages of 12 – 17 I lived in various child welfare programs, youth refuges and housing projects, as well as a short stint in boarding school. By the time that I left home I should have had a basic sex education… but I didn’t – and the damage was already done. My mothers inability to discuss even the very basics of human sexuality(such as periods etc) cast a heavy shadow of shame regarding all things sexual over me. This made it very difficult for me to ever ask the questions I needed answers to, or even discuss anything relating to puberty and my body let alone sex and sexuality.

This was almost 20 years ago, well before the days of the internet, but I know that if I had access to a resource as informative, accessible and sexually positive as Scarleteen.com that shame wouldn’t have been so strong and I could’ve avoided some of the dangers I exposed myself to. I also would’ve had Answers, the RIGHT answers about my of my sexual questions.

I learned about periods from Dolly Magazine, Judy Bloom’s book – ‘Are you there god? It’s me Margaret‘ as well as my best friend at the time’s mum – I was so grateful to her, an amazing mum & midwife who was very open to discussing all such things with her daughters as well as those of us who were their friends. She was the person who taught me about how pads and tampons worked, and was the person I called after a pregnancy scare, but I digress.

When I did get my period I was far too ashamed and embarrassed to tell my mum, for those first few months I improvised, destroying plenty of pairs of underwear and ordered sample packs of tampons from magazines (as my mum had a full hysterectomy there were never any sanitary products in the house). It wasn’t great but it was preferable to telling my mum. Eventually she found a packet of tampons and some dirty undies and proceeded to go off her head. Yelling at me, calling me names and proclaiming how disgusting I was to anyone who would listen. She even called me a whore for having tampons! Sexual negativity at its best!

A few months later after she threw me out I was living in a DOCS (the government department that takes care of neglected kids and foster care etc) facility. I was too scared to even tell any of the other girls I had my period, let alone any of the workers, so yet again I was improvising. The thought of asking one of the workers for a packet of tampons freaked me out! For some reason tampons and pads were locked in a cupboard of the girls bathroom. It wasn’t until I had an overnight accident that the subject was brought up and a worker asked if I would prefer tampons or pads. It was such a huge relief to know I’d be getting what I needed… but damn it that worker forgot to get them out of the cupboard before her shift ended. I never got those tampons.

It has taken so long to get over the negativity that my mother instilled in me as well as the shame, still 20+ years later some sexual shame and negativity still lingers – but thankfully I’ve now got the whole period thing down!

From then on growing up in the system I had access to information regarding std’s and pregnancy prevention, with condoms always being regularly available, but the shame always remained. I was far to scared and embarrassed to ask the questions I had or ask for the help I needed. If I had a resource such as Scarleteen.com I could have done it all anonymously, and could’ve shrugged off the sexual negativity that was bred into me a lot faster than I did.

The holes in my sexual education weren’t limited to puberty, they weren’t all related to the shame my mother instilled in me, but all of them were due to a lack of accessible sexually positive resources. To be honest I’m still learning and although it is aimed at teens, Scarleteen.com has helped to answer some of the questions I’ve had as an adult and has taught me things I never knew about.

As a parent I’m also incredibly grateful that such a positive sexual education resource exists, both so that I can find out information i want to convey to my teenage son – Im a girl, how the hell am I meant to know what a wet dream is like??? and also so that I can share the site with him, knowing that he can find answers to questions he might not want to ask his mum.
