Sexiest Blogs of 2011 – Nominations now open

Each year for the past 3 years Rori from Between My Sheets has been putting together a list of the top 100 sexiest blogs in the world. The top 100  are decided upon by a group of esteemed judges (something I was very happy to get to do last year!) who check out, read and vote upon hundreds of sex blogs as nominated by the general viewing public.

Nominations for the top 100 Sexiest Blogs of 2011 are now open and there are even prizes up for grabs for anyone who nominates a blog.

The rules are all pretty easy when it comes to who you can nominate: The blog needs to be at least a year old and currently active. Blogs that are password protected cannot be nominated (although the odd password protected post here and there is fine) and you can’t nominate your own blog.You can read the full list of the rules on the nominations page.

You can nominate as many blogs as you want and the nominations close on August 31st 2011.

Eden Bloggers

Got Blog??

There are a lot of new and exciting things happening on Eden Fantasys lately – it isn’t just a sex toy store or a place where people review adult products, it’s also a pretty huge, thriving online community too. There are all kinds of workshops being run by various community members as well as various clubs you can participate in such as the Porn Club and The Eden Bloggers Club.

Porn Club is pretty cool – you get to review two assigned porn dvd’s each month and then you all get together to discuss the movies with all the other Porn Club members on the forums. Often a few porn stars drop in to make it all that much sweeter.¹

But even cooler than Porn Club is the Eden Bloggers Club…

Eden Bloggers

Eden Fantasys Bloggers club is a group run by the sex toy guru Mistress Kay and it is a place for bloggers old and new to come together and share their blogging experience and knowledge. It consists of a couple of different portions to help you publicise, improve and share your blog.

• Community Blog Directory – If you have a blog you should add it to the list. It doesn’t have to be a blog related to sex, you just have to be a member of the general Eden community to be able to add your blog.
• Weekly Blog Post Round Up – If you’ve written a blog post in the past 2 weeks you can go and add a link to your post within that weeks forum post. EG: this post will go in the current round up forum post.  Note: Sex toy reviews and other posts sponsored by, or linking to competitors sites aren’t considered kosher for kinda obvious reasons, But apart from that anything goes.
• The Bloggers Club Blog – to help keep the best info all in one spot Eden has set up a blog for all of their community clubs, which hosts posts and other info for Eden Bloggers here.
• Blog Club Meetings -  This is my favourite part of the club -  Once a month everybody gets together for an hour or so to chat about topics relating to blogging. Last month they discussed ‘How to stay Anonymous with your sex blog’ and you can still access all of the valuable info contained within the discussion by visiting it on the forums. This months Eden Bloggers Club meeting will be on Thursday March 31st @7PM Eastern time and the topic up for discussion is one I often find myself struggling with – ‘How to get Inspiration for your Blog‘
• The Blogger Club Forum – this is where the afore mentioned bloggers club meetings take place, but it is also a place to get help and feedback from other members. If you have a question you can always create a forum post to get help on a specific question relating to blogging – whether its how to add a banner to your site or which blogging platform to go with. There are plenty of well experienced community members there that are always happy to help out

How to Improve your site’s Alexa Ranking

Why care about your site’s Alexa Ranking?

There is little point in having a website or blog if no one is viewing it, and if you are reviewing sex toys or for that matter any product your website’s success will affect how willing companies are to work with you. There are many ways that a site’s success can be measured: Visitor Stats, Incoming Links, Keyword Ranking, Page Rank and as I’ll be discussing today – Alexa Ranking. Some sex toy retailers as well as adult product manufacturers will only work with reviewers who have sites that have reached a particular ranking.

There is a lot of conjecture about just how important or effective Alexa rankings are in determining the overall success of a website, mainly because of the way they gather their data. But never the less – if it’s important to advertiser’s and sponsors then it’s important to those of us who need them.

What Does Your Alexa Ranking Mean?

The Alexa Rating for a website is a numerical value that represents the popularity of your website based on traffic. Unlike many other rankings where a higher number is desired (such as Google Page Rank) with an Alexa ranking the lower the number the better. Also unlike some other metrics used to measure the success of a website that can take months to register the existence of a new blog. every site – no matter how new, no matter how small, has an Alexa Ranking. You don’t need to do anything  or sign up anywhere in order to have an Alexa Ranking, your website simply needs to exist.

The number of your Alexa Ranking means that you are the  xth most popular site on the net according to the amount of traffic visiting your site. Google of course is #1, the site that gets the most traffic on the web. It is closely followed by facebook at #2 and you tube at #3. As I’m writing this Screaming-Violet.com has an Alexa ranking of #861,297 (my current ranking is visible in my sidebar), that means that out of the millions of sites out there only 861, 296 are receiving more traffic than me. Just like your website traffic fluctuates so does your Alexa Ranking.

To Directly quote Alexa:

Alexa computes traffic rankings by analyzing the Web usage of millions of Alexa Toolbar users and data obtained from other, diverse traffic data sources. The information is sorted, sifted, anonymized, counted, and computed, until, finally, we get the traffic rankings shown in the Alexa service. The process is relatively complex, but if you have a need to know, please read on.

How Do You Find Out Your Alexa Ranking?

You do not need to sign up for anything or pay any money in order to find out your site’s Alexa Ranking is. To find out your Alexa Ranking visit Alexa.com and type your URL (www.yoursite.com) into the search box and hit enter. .  The results page will give you your Alexa Traffic rank – your position amongst all websites globally, followed by your Traffic Rank in US – your position regarding US traffic and finally the number of Sites linking in – unlike the other two numbers the sites linking in data isn’t updated daily. It’s only updated 4 times a year so it can take quite some time before you will see any change in this number.

Underneath this information there are a row of 5 stars that may or may not be filled in. This is where reviews of your site are reflected, but we will touch on those a bit later.

Alexa also has more information regarding your site, its visitors, keyword analysis and other forms of data which you can view by hitting the ‘Get Details‘ button, but for this post Let’s just stick with your overall global ranking and what we can do to improve it.

Claiming Your Site

The very first step you should take in order to improve the Alexa ranking of your sex blog… or any site for that matter is to ‘Claim Your Website‘ – Claiming your site enables you to not only keep its information up to date but it also allows you to respond to reviews that others write about your site. You can either register with Alexa or just use facebook connect to login to Alexa.com but either way there is no cost.

After you have registered and completed the process to officially claim your site it’s now time for you to ‘Edit Your Sites Listing‘ It is here that you can add a description to your site that will be publicly visible on Alexa.com when anyone visits there to check out your Alexa ranking or to write a review for your site. After you have submitted your information it can take up to two working days for these changes to be visible.

As a sex blogger it is understandable that you may not wish to have your legal name linked to your blog, or your actual street address. I don’t even want the town I live in to be linked to my site – If this is the case for you as well you can leave sections such as your address blank and use your online persona for your name. As long as you include your valid email address so that Alexa can contact you the other personal details don’t really matter.

Improving Your Alexa Ranking

Now that Alexa knows who you are and you have added all of your information to their listing for your site you’re ready to start taking steps to improve your Alexa Ranking. As we already know your ranking is determined not directly by the amount of traffic your website is getting, but rather the amount of traffic Alexa knows is visiting your website.

Getting Alexa to recognise more of your Traffic

Step 1: Download and Install the Alexa Toolbar

The most Important step you can take to help improve your ranking is to Download and install the Alexa Toolbar for Firefox, this way your visits to your site are recognised by Alexa and is classed as Traffic visiting your site.  If you aren’t using firefox there are also add on’s and toolbars available for chrome and internet explorer that you can access from the Alexa Toolbar page, if you are using another browser such as Safari or Opera you may be able to find a similar toolbar or browser add on by visiting the website of your browsers creators ie:apple.com for safari users.

By Installing and using the toolbar you are anonymously sharing your net surfing habits with Alexa.com, this means that every page you view with the toolbar installed will be registered as traffic by Alexa. When you install the toolbar it asks a couple of questions about your age group, your sex etc. None of the information shared via the toolbar is identifiable. All data collected by Alexa is 100% anonymous.

Step 2: Set your website as your home page

I understand that not all sex related blogs are safe to be used as your browsers homepage, nor may you be comfortable with sharing your adult content blog with your friends and co-workers… However the most prolific tip for improving your Alexa ranking that I’ve come across is to get as many friends and family using the Alexa toolbar with your website set as their homepage. Again it is about getting more traffic to your site in a way that is registered by Alexa.

Luckily for us sex bloggers who may not wish to share our sites with those we know in real life, we are part of a blogging community in which we all regularly visit one another’s websites . So if you aren’t able to set your website as your homepage you can still visit your own website once a day and you can do other things to encourage others to install the toolbar and simply visit your website.

Step 3: Install an Alexa Widget on your Website

Although the majority of information that Alexa collects comes from the toolbar there are also a few other ways in which they collect data, giving us the opportunity to again get more of our traffic recognised by Alexa. You can quickly and easily create an Alexa Widget and then install it on your website, once installed this will both display your up to date Alexa Ranking as well as send information back to Alexa each time your website is loaded.

On the Widgets page, which is part of the “Site Owners tools‘ section of Alexa.com you are given the option between two different types of widget, one which shows your sites Alexa Stats – both your global traffic ranking as well as the number of incoming link or the other which displays only your Alexa traffic ranking. Each of these widgets has three different graphic display options. If like me, Alexa is yet to recognise any of your inbound links you may wish to choose the second, traffic ranking only option.

To create your widget simply visit the Widgets page and enter your website’s URL into the box associated with the widget you wish to install and hit enter. The next page will give you the html code for each of the different graphic options. Choose the one you wish to install, highlight all of the code and copy it. Now all you need to add this code to your website.

The best place to display it is in your sidebar or footer  as these areas get loaded no matter which page or post on your blog is being viewed. You can use the ‘plain text widget’ in your WordPress or blogger dashboard to directly paste the html code that you have copied. Be sure to save it and then check that the Alexa Widget is displaying properly.

If you have a not so great Alexa ranking you may not wish to share it with your site visitors and prospective advertisers. If this is the case you may want to leave adding the Alexa Ranking widget to your site until you have broken into the first 2 million, or whatever ranking you are proud to have. Check out the Alexa Ranking of other sex bloggers and sex toy reviewers you look up to and use those stats to decide when to add the widget. Personally I feel anything that breaks the 2 million mark is doing well, cracking the top 1million is doing great, and the top 500,ooo Amazing!!

Step 4: Get your Website Reviewed

For someone who regularly reviews sex toys and other adult products it really hadn’t occurred to me to get others to review my own website, but having your site reviewed on Alexa.com will help to improve your Alexa Ranking. In order to help you to encourage more of your visitors to review your site there is also an Alexa Review Widget that you can install on your website. Again this is accessible via the ‘Site Owners tools‘ section of Alexa.com

Just like the previous widget you will be given a piece of html code to copy and paste into position where you would like the widget to appear. Unlike the traffic stats widget there are many more options for the review widget, including a number of different colors that should fit in with the scheme of your website.

You could even take the initiative and write reviews of other sex blogs, or in fact any blogs that are part of your individual niche. After reviewing someone’s site send them a message to tell them you have done so and ask that they return the favour. I for one will certainly return the favour and review the site of anyone who reviews mine.

Step 5:  Improve your website Overall

Whilst the previous steps have been pretty direct and their impact on your ranking is easily understood there are many other things that you can do to improve your website that will have a positive effect on your Alexa Ranking. Quite simple things that you should already be doing like:

• Publishing posts regularly – it is the months when I post 2 or 3 times a week that I see the greatest improvement in all of my website stats.
• Mix your efforts for improving your alexa ranking along with SEO techniques and link building strategies as well – not only will these things help to improve your Alexa rankings but they will also help to boost your sites visibility and overall success.
• Keep an eye on your website’s stats, not just your Alexa ranking but also your in-bound traffic, the sources of your traffic, your google page rank and more. If you are using WordPress one great Plug in you can use is WP Stats DashBoard -I use this and absolutely love it. It keeps track of numerous statistics related to your blog as well as how they have changed over the previous month
• If you aren’t using WordPress search google for a browser add on or plug in such as the ‘Search Status‘ Add on for FireFox that will show you various stats related to your blog – page rank & inbound links etc
• Keep track of your Alexa Ranking – I began by just writing down my ranking every few days in a book, but have since moved on to a spreadsheet. Doing so will both show you how far you have come as well as to help you pin point any actions you may have taken, such as posting more often, that have had a positive effect on your ranking.
• Subscribe to my site via RSS or email as I will be doing regular posts on how to improve your blog similar to this one. I’ll be covering topics such as Google Page Rank, Keywords, Search Engine Optimisation, Link Building strategies and much much more.

The Alexa Re-Direct WordPress PlugIn – Why you shouldn’t use it

There is a plug in available for WordPress that is rumoured to help improve your Alexa Ranking by adjusting links within your site to Alexa re direct links using JavaScript. Basically the plug in will work between WordPress and your browser to edit any links that are within your own domain to links that are re directed through alexa.

For example http://www.yourblog.com/page/2 would be altered to http://redirect.alexa.com/redirect?http://www.yourblog.com/page/2 - Thus ensuring that Alexa is made aware of this traffic.

The plug in is designed to use JavaScript to change the links so that the Google bots crawling your site are still able to crawl your site as usual. This Practice is commonly known as ‘Link Cloaking‘ it is classed as unethical linking practises to alter links in such a way and is very similar to the problem raised with Eden Fantasys earlier in the year. I won’t be using any such plug in, not now, not ever.

I have only mentioned it here as nearly every site offering tips to improve your Alexa Ranking includes tips to use this plug in – However they fail to point out that it is against ethical linkage practises and could in fact have a negative impact on your site’s success. So no matter how many times you read in other places that this plug in is helpful….. Ignore it!

In Conclusion

The number one way to Improve your ranking is to install the toolbar and visit your site regularly, although some of the other tips here may or may not have a direct impact upon the way Alexa gathers data about the traffic flow of your site, anything you do that increases the visibility of your site on the web and draws in more traffic will have a knock on effect and will eventually be reflected in your Alexa Ranking. Mistress Kay has written an Amazing Blogging 101 Guide over on Good Vibes Magazine that every sex blogger should read.

I will be posting an update over the next month or so to show just how my ranking has improved after following these steps so that I can directly show you just how much they have impacted my ranking. I will also be working on a ‘blog hop’ style list of links to related blogs owned by people who are using the Alexa toolbar. That way we can share the wealth amongst our selves

Sex Ed Matters

Why I wish I’d had Scarleteen.com

I grew up a little different to most, I was kicked out of home at the age of 12 shortly after my parents split up. From the ages of 12 – 17 I lived in various child welfare programs, youth refuges and housing projects, as well as a short stint in boarding school. By the time that I left home I should have had a basic sex education… but I didn’t – and the damage was already done. My mothers inability to discuss even the very basics of human sexuality(such as periods etc) cast a heavy shadow of shame regarding all things sexual over me. This made it very difficult for me to ever ask the questions I needed answers to, or even discuss anything relating to puberty and my body let alone sex and sexuality.

This was almost 20 years ago, well before the days of the internet, but I know that if I had access to a resource as informative, accessible and sexually positive as Scarleteen.com that shame wouldn’t have been so strong and I could’ve avoided some of the dangers I exposed myself to. I also would’ve had Answers, the RIGHT answers about my of my sexual questions.

I learned about periods from Dolly Magazine, Judy Bloom’s book – ‘Are you there god? It’s me Margaret‘ as well as my best friend at  the time’s mum – I was so grateful to her, an amazing mum & midwife who was very open to discussing all such things with her daughters as well as those of us who were their friends. She was the person who taught me about how pads and tampons worked, and was the person I called after a pregnancy scare, but I digress.

When I did get my period I was far too ashamed and embarrassed to tell my mum, for those first few months I improvised, destroying plenty of pairs of underwear and ordered sample packs of tampons from magazines (as my mum had a full hysterectomy there were never any sanitary products in the house). It wasn’t great but it was preferable to telling my mum. Eventually she found a packet of tampons and some dirty undies and proceeded to go off her head. Yelling at me, calling me names and proclaiming how disgusting I was to anyone who would listen. She even called me a whore for having tampons! Sexual negativity at its best!

A few months later after she threw me out I was living in a DOCS (the government department that takes care of neglected kids and foster care etc) facility. I was too scared to even tell any of the other girls I had my period, let alone any of the workers, so yet again I was improvising. The thought of asking one of the workers for a packet of tampons freaked me out! For some reason tampons and pads were locked in a cupboard of the girls bathroom. It wasn’t until I had an overnight accident that the subject was brought up and a worker asked if I would prefer tampons or pads. It was such a huge relief to know I’d be getting what I needed… but damn it that worker forgot to get them out of the cupboard before her shift ended. I never got those tampons.

It has taken so long to get over the negativity that my mother instilled in me as well as the shame, still 20+ years later some sexual shame and negativity still lingers – but thankfully I’ve now got the whole period thing down!

From then on growing up in the system I had access to information regarding std’s and pregnancy prevention, with condoms always being regularly available, but the shame always remained. I was far to scared and embarrassed to ask the questions I had or ask for the help I needed. If I had a resource such as Scarleteen.com I could have done it all anonymously, and could’ve shrugged off the sexual negativity that was bred into me a lot faster than I did.

The holes in my sexual education weren’t limited to puberty, they weren’t all related to the shame my mother instilled in me, but all of them were due to a lack of accessible sexually positive resources. To be honest I’m still learning and although it is aimed at teens, Scarleteen.com has helped to answer some of the questions I’ve had as an adult and has taught me things I never knew about.

As a parent I’m also incredibly grateful that such a positive sexual education resource exists, both so that I can find out information i want to convey to my teenage son – Im a girl, how the hell am I meant to know what a wet dream is like???  and also so that I can share the site with him, knowing  that he can find answers to questions he might not want to ask his mum. How have Sex Toys Changed My Life?

My first ever actual sex toy was a jelly like rabbit vibrator with a wired  remote control unit that was a gift from X for I think my 20th birthday. This was in the days before you could readily buy sex toys online – heck It was back when 56k modems were considered super fast! I loved the purple Jelly monster, I grew VERY attached to the clit stimulator, I seriously couldn’t get enough of it.  This meant that eventually I broke it. One of the wires between the base and the ticklers motor snapped off due to my very over zealous use. I very quickly learned how to use a souldering  iron (as I wrote about in Sex Toy Repair 101) After a few years the whole toy eventually died in the bottom of the cupboard, it was a gooey, lint covered, gross blob of jelly, with an incredibly rusted battery case filled with a set of eroded batteries spewing forth their corrosive goodness – EWW.

I had no choice but to dispose of my dear bunny. I did replace it a few  years later with another rabbit vibe which i bought online¹, but it wasn’t something that I used regularly. I barely ever used it alone as the tickler was no where as strong as my original one that had it’s own separate motor, it was mainly something I used with X – having internal stimulation whilst receiving head always sends me over the edge, but I digress.

Fast forward to this year and  my purchase of the We Vibe 2 from AdultToysCorner.com. This one purchase started off a whole shift in the way I saw both sex and sex toys. I went from getting off occasionally to getting off constantly whenever I slept with X and used  We Vibe 2. I swear that thing became my orgasm insurance,  it also started to open doors for me to further explore my sexuality. Not long after ordering my we vibe I started this blog and I haven’t looked back since.

My collection has grown somewhat in the past 6 months and I hope it will continue to do so, as with each new toy I get to explore a different part of my sexuality. I’m discovering many new ways of creating sexual pleasure for myself as well as reinvigorating my partnered sex life too. It’s funny to look back at how much my mindset  has changed since I bought that little piece of purple silicone, it is by far the best purchase I’ve ever made.

I’m now looking towards the future and building up my self esteem and self worth so that I can move on to bigger and better things. Some may question just how sex toys could make such a deep impression on my life and I don’t know if I could answer clearly… I just know that they have changed my life, and they’ve changed it for the better.

Getting Your Blog Listed in relative Blog directories will both Increase traffic to your site and help increase your Page Rank, all of which in turn helps make your site more successful and if you are looking to get paid advertising it can assist you to earn more per advertisement.

If, like me, you also have a tumblr account, remember to list that as a separate blog, especially if it also contains sexually related content.

Pleasurists: Every time I publish a Review I always submit it to Pleasurists. For those who haven’t come across pleasurists yet, it is a weekly round-up of the latest sex toy and adult product reviews as well as the current give-aways. So the Whole Purpose of Adding your site to directories and getting people to link to you is to get your site or blog seen. How do you know if it is being seen? You can check lots of different factors such as the number of pages that link to your site on google or yahoo, or what your google Pagerank is, or Alexa Rating etc.

This Weekend

Things that I achieved this past weekend

Friday: Went to watch my son’s best friends soccer game with his mum’s (yep, my closest friends in this town are [very hot] lesbians). Sadly they lost 2-1, but fun was had & Plans to visit them the next day were made.

Then stayed up until 3am working on editing some images for a Bride-Zilla (Ladies make sure you LOVE the color you chose for your bridesmaids before you buy the dresses, get married and have photos taken!!) very painstaking and rather annoying.

Saturday:  Slept in until after 1pm. Scrambled to reply to emails etc and get dressed to go visit my lesbian friends – who I’m going to call…hmmm….’The Girls’ until I (or you – of you have a suggestion for names please comment – I love comments) come up with better names.

My son rode his bike over to the girls house whilst I finished up work and quickly had a shower, I had soot from X’s truck all through my hair and one of the girls was going to be doing my hair for me.

Finally arrive at the girls place, discuss color options (I’m Australian and we spell color -> colour, but as I create websites etc I am in the habit of writing color) and I’m dispensed off to get hair dye from the shops.

X calls telling me he is nearly back in town after leaving Melbourne @1am, I go fuck around and pick him up. He’s pissed that our son & I are spending the evening at his mates place, and what I bought for him for dinner wasn’t acceptable. Off to the shops AGAIN

Call the girls explain the delay, they’re cool with it and just ask me to grab a bbq chicken and some salad seeing as I’m at the shops. I walk into the shops as X walks out. Frustrated as I hate both wasting time and going to the supermarket – Actually I hate all shopping unless it’s online.

Drop X home after receiving cranky lecture about how I can’t drive (My 1 accident in a car to his 2 car and 2 truck accidents!) and have no respect for his car. Run back to the girls house and hope he is asleep before I get home.

Finally get there with hair dye, food and coke. I can’t survive without coke to drink, nor can they, but they like rum with theirs.

Discuss my color choices, rich shiny chocolate, vivid violet and a glossy blue black – I can’t make decisions…we decide to whack all 3 colors in in slices, big foil like patches that interweave. The kids are playing, the mums are drinking, I get my hair cut & colored (whilst having great boobs in my face) leave my son to stay the night so I can head home and take advantage of X.

Get home X is asleep. Thankfully he’s asleep on the lounge so I head to bed and spread out across the entire bed. Something I rarely get to do.

Sunday: finish adding the images to the ‘porn for women’ post and post it.

Putting out my weekly ‘Weekend Reading’ Post filled with the best blogs I’ve discovered – & this weekend’s one was going to be the all important ANZ Issue – (I was going to call it an ANZAC issue – but have great respects for our ANZAC’s – Australian and New Zealand Army Corp’s – for those not in the know)- but I promise you will see an amazing ANZ issue next weekend.

And Today….drum roll please . . .  I finally got around to registering my own domains and am going through the paces of setting up my beautiful sexy blog up into it’s own customised theme and adding lots of bells and whistles. (I downloaded pictures of about 100 different purple sex toys today to create some artwork for it)
